Poetry
36,000 Times (AKA Hide’n Seek) (Poem By Hakim Bellamy)
Hide and Seek – by hakim bellamy
You let me be the wayward spring in your mattress
The thorn in your bush
And sometimes
Even let’s me needle in your haystack
You’re happenstance and chance
One day I opened my eyes
And there you were
A weaver of wormholes
A fisher of time space continuums
In a planetarium of parallel realities
You knew how to unite universes
Find fate on a highway of fiber optic fortunes
And fortunately
No, frankly
It’s frightening to think
That all these solitary confined globes
Have orbits of their own that revolve around themselves
And somehow avoid colliding with meteoric egos
And more often each other
In the rat race around the sun
But you
Took us from too stranded individualities
And found a way to weave a reality of you and me
Out of this world wide web
If there is no wind in space
Ships don’t drift themselves together on their own
What caused our twin rocks to gravitate?
I sometimes get caught wondering
If I’ve just stubbornly sustained this slumber since you first
Commandeered the steering wheel of my dream
Or if the day I first met you
Was the day I woke up.
And it really is quite amazing
Out of 6,771,990,247 people on this planet
You chose me
Of all the granules in this sandbox
You chose to split your life in half
And pair it with mine
The one place where we are center
Self-important and self-conscious
Directors in our own holodeck operas
You’ve extended me top billing on your marquis
At the premiere of your great one-act
This one act that we never get to script
Yet we all play
On average we blink 36,000 times a day
Which means I’m the lucky mutherfucker
That gets to almost die that many times
Cause you disappear every time I close my eyes
But also THAT guy
That gets to wake up to you
One thousand one
One thousand two
As many times a necessary
Every day
To see if you’re still there
And you are…
